Toscanini Ice Cream Still Life

This week I tackled some ice cream. You've got to love ice cream on these hot summer days. I can't get enough of it. This rather contemporary composition with its heavy impasto technique mixes realism with expressionism. One of the best ice creams you will ever test - Toscanini.

Ketchup Still Life - Wasp Sting Tale

This weekend I was happily painting my little still life (well this one is large compared to many other paintings -16" 20") when I decided to walk out on my deck for a break. It was a beautiful Friday. I was standing on my deck overlooking the woods behind my house when I saw a wasp buzzing around my arm. I decided to play it cool and not move. I thought, heck I'm always working in my yard and shade garden and have never been bothered by them. However, this time it was different. There I was, standing with hands on my hip with my apron on when all of a sudden BAM! I got stung in the arm. Son of a gun- he got me ! I was so mad. My wife mad same recipe using meat tenderizer that help. I decided to go back and paint and after several hours it seemed to be better. I went to bed that night and all was fine. The next day, I looked at my sting and it had a little pimple like head on the wound. I thought that I had got the stinger out the previous day. So, I decided to try to relieve the pressure on the would. SO I pop it. Mistake ! What I did was release the venom into my system and down my arm. No I have a red slightly puffy wound driving me nits. I really messed up. Oh well, that is my tale and what I had to go through to paint this still life. Being an artist is a hard life - stinger and all.

This still life of a ketchup bottle (which I bought from ebay) and a salt shaker and creamer is a classic Diner / Kitchen style still life. I played with the reflections and highlights and created a sort of somber quiet scene. Hope you enjoy it.

Vintage Cat Creamer Still Life

This week I decided to take on something that is very different and very unusual. First I wrapped canvas around a 3/4" birch and gessoed all the sides. I wanted to play with the texture of the canvas but still maintain the hard surface of the wood underneath. This is the first time I have tried this and I am pleased with the results.

This painting subject is very different and perhaps a little odd from some of my loyal followers. This strange and yet compelling painting of a very retro/vintage cat creamer captivated me. I was drawn but the unusual design painted surface. However, what really caught my fancy where the fine little cracks in the surface of the paint. The very dark and strong shadowing makes this painting a real eye catcher. I must admit, the digital image really does not serve this painting justice - the details in the layering and lines can't be captured in this photo.

Cracked Egg with Yolk Still Life III

In the last few months I've been playing around with a little different subject matter than what I normally paint. Those images of high reflective and chrome surfaces have given way to gloss and shine of food. I have not abandoned them but simply have given them a rest. In a way, there really isn't all that much difference to the normal viewer with this so-called change. But to me, it is dramatically different. I find the subject very free and enjoyable to paint.

The subject is almost abstract. I paint the subject with many layers and build the surface in heavy impasto texture in spots. In contrast to some of my tighter still life's, these little food bites have become my next challenge. They are not easy to paint but they are fun when they work. I can't tell you how many times my still life's have been trashed. Nothing is more disappointing that to spend hours and days at times and have a painting fail. Sometimes I wish I could see the subject more objectively and save myself a lot of work..oh well. Well, this little painting is one of my favorites. I really enjoy the various colors of white, green, yellow and orange in this little translucent painting. Please enjoy.

Double Egg Yolk and Bubbles-Still Life-

This week I guess I have become fascinated with eggs (yolk in this case). I never thought that something that we take for granted as simple as an egg could be so fascinating. Years ago I would never imagine that a subject such as an egg could be used as an art form. The colors, reflective and translucent nature of the bubbles plays right into my wheel house. Hope you enjoy it.
