Saturday Morning Pancake Breakfast

This painting was started before breakfast - can you tell. The joke at home here is that every Saturday my wife and I go out to eat at a local Diner and I always order the same thing - Pancakes. My wife got a kick out of this painting. Hope you enjoy the painting as much as I enjoy eating breakfast.

Yummy and so real. Been thinking about doing pancakes since I did the syrup carafe in December. But these would be hard to beat.

Wowee, that syrup is unbelievable. Can you share a little about how you approached this?

Hi Suzanne,
Sorry for the delay - my computer died and I had to re-install XP. I tried to save it because I didn't back up all my stuff. I lost two days because of this and I still ended up losing everything - oh well.

As for the painting. I toned the canvas down at first to establish a surface color. Then after it dried I started appling thin layers of color (seinna, browns and other warm tones) in thin layers to build up surface and texture of the pancake. The key is to keep it thin and transparent if possible. Then I built up the surface gradually and added thicker coats of paint (impasto). When the painting dried a little, I started to add the shading of the syrup to the surface of the pancake. I simply added the same tone with a shade darker to give the illusion of depth. I continued with this throughout the painting.

I really had fun with this painting and hope some day to do more. I guess it all depends if my buyers are interested.

Thank you for asking Suzanne. I appreciate you visiting my blog.
