This is another painting from my bowl series. This is a still life of a ripe delicious red grape fruit. I went shopping at a local market by my house and had to buy some grape fruit. I think it makes for a cool still life painting.
This is my second pie painting in this small series of pie art. I pleaded with my wife to bake more cherry, blueberry and apple pies for the sake of art. She, a loving wife, comes to my rescue every time. As for me, I get to paint some one of my favorite desserts and at the same time, I get to chow on sweet pie (That's the life!).
Marbles has and will always be a major subject in my art. When I was a child I loved marbles. I enjoyed the colors the shine and their wonderful spectrum of light. It has been awhile since I painted one of my marble paintings - so I figured it was time to deliver again.
This painting illustrates the rich orange colors of orange slices in an aluminum bowl. I couldn't resist to paint this because of the colors and highly reflective nature of this subject.
I thought this bowl of radishes was a maze of abstract illusion and design. What a tangle wave of red!

This composition of a nectarine slices in a aluminum bowl is a whirlpool of reflections and colors. When I first decided to paint this, I was intrigued but the distorted colors and imagery caused by the bowl. The play of light, angles and texture makes this piece one of my favorites. I bought a bunch of nectarines and plums last week while they were still on sale at a local fruit market.
This very popular subject matter among artist intrigued me. I couldn't resist to paint anything with some kind of illustration and humor. This very expressive painterly subject of one of my favorite treats is not only humorous its almost considered as contemporary realism.
I must admit, once my wife discovered I bought a cherry pie for a still life last week, she had to do me one better. She baked one of her classic cherry pies for me. She makes an awesome crust! I had to capture the taste and flavor of her fantastic pie. I really wanted to capture the transparency of the crust over laying the cherries and the dark rich color of cherries. The pie was to die for!
In this still life I couldn't resist in painting one of the last slices of water melon (for me) for the summer. As summer comes to a close I will miss the sweet taste of water melon. The reds and greens make for a strong composition on the wood surface.

I must admit, my wife makes the best apple and cherry pie around. However, this pie was bought at a bakery - my bad. I wanted to try to capture the aluminum plate. I thought the red from the cherries and the cool tones would play well together. They do! I had fun painting this very expressive composition.

In this still life I wanted to play with the distortion of the eggs and the glass of the pyrex measuring container. My wife as a collection of these measuring glass cups and I couldn't resist in painting one for her.

Almost surreal and life like. The yolk color is one of my favorite to paint. The shine and transparency of the shell and yolk make this painting a real charm for me.
A number of years ago my Dad and I would stop for a muffins and coffee before he and I would go to work on renovating some old house in Detroit. My dad is a retired carpenter who enjoyed fixing up old houses. I'll never forget those mornings he and I would chat over coffee and talk sports, politics and work. He is 80 now and he still works like a dog. Must be the old Italian blood in him. This painting may seem simple, but to me it is like a froze one second of our time together.
This past month I've experimented with two types of paintings. One with canvas over wood (CoW) and one without. This painting is a complete opposite of my CoW paintings. The smooth surface adds an almost hyper realism to this very unique and strong still life. The painting is that of cow kettle on a stove. This has to be one of my favorites. The cool grayish and blue tones among high reflective surfaces are complimented by the strong reds in the cow's nose. This painting contains many levels of grays and blues but the painting stands on its unusual and original composition. I don't know if I should laugh or stare at this thing.
I really enjoy these classical Diner table scenes. There is so much history in this type of still life. The traditional American landscape of cafe's and Diners will never get old to me.
Every once and awhile I come up with a piece that is really fun to paint which required almost no effort. This still life of a toast and a poached egg is an example of a painting the exemplifies texture, color and a strong compositional design. This painting was prepared over a 3/4" poplar surface which contains a smooth almost toothless surface. The still life is that of a cake mixing bowl with cake mix. I found the texture and swirling pattern in the cake mix an almost abstract and impressionistic design. Not only does it make for an interesting composition it taste good......cake !

The high reflections and in places very detailed still life makes for a strong piece. Throughout the 6.5 years that I've painted and sold on ebay, I painted many tea pots and it is still fun to paint.

This approach provides me the texture of the canvas (which I like) and the hard surface of the wood (which I like for detail). This week I tackled some cherry ice cream. You've got to love ice cream on these hot summer days. I can't get enough of it. This rather contemporary composition with its heavy impasto technique mixes realism with expressionism.
This weekend I was happily painting my little still life (well this one is large compared to many other paintings -16" 20") when I decided to walk out on my deck for a break. It was a beautiful Friday. I was standing on my deck overlooking the woods behind my house when I saw a wasp buzzing around my arm. I decided to play it cool and not move. I thought, heck I'm always working in my yard and shade garden and have never been bothered by them. However, this time it was different. There I was, standing with hands on my hip with my apron on when all of a sudden BAM! I got stung in the arm. Son of a gun- he got me ! I was so mad. My wife mad same recipe using meat tenderizer that help. I decided to go back and paint and after several hours it seemed to be better. I went to bed that night and all was fine. The next day, I looked at my sting and it had a little pimple like head on the wound. I thought that I had got the stinger out the previous day. So, I decided to try to relieve the pressure on the would. SO I pop it. Mistake ! What I did was release the venom into my system and down my arm. No I have a red slightly puffy wound driving me nits. I really messed up. Oh well, that is my tale and what I had to go through to paint this still life. Being an artist is a hard life - stinger and all.
This week I decided to take on something that is very different and very unusual. First I wrapped canvas around a 3/4" birch and gessoed all the sides. I wanted to play with the texture of the canvas but still maintain the hard surface of the wood underneath. This is the first time I have tried this and I am pleased with the results.
I went wild! I decided with pancake, sausage and eggs (I like it over well). I liked the composition and color in this contemporary style still life painting. This is part of my on-going series in my breakfast theme series.
This painting of two sunny side up eggs on toast is a painting that is filled with rich warm and cool tones. I decided this weekend to take a break from my passion of pancakes and switch to eggs - can't go wrong here either. Eat up !
In the spirit of the 4th of July, I painted this rather expressive still life with its array of colors and design. I pushed the enveloped a little and challenged the eye in this rather patriotic painting. Please enjoy.
